A question many of our customers have asked is:
Q: Will using an aftermarket battery or power adapter void the warranty on my laptop computer?
A: The answer is NO. Laptop manufacturers have a reason for giving you this misinformation. The reason is that replacement batteries and power adapters supply a great deal to their profit and bottom lines. There are two pieces of legislation that forbid companies from voiding warranties when a consumer wants to use an aftermarket product that was not originally made by that company. The laws that we are referring to are the Magnuson-Moss Warranty Improvement Act and the Sherman & Clayton Antitrust Act. We have taken the liberty of listing them below for your reference.
The Magnuson-Moss Act - The MMA, in particular, states undeniably that a company cannot sell a product under the facade that the consumer is required to buy replacement parts, additions, etc. from their company only. This includes ALL parts including, but not limited to batteries and power adapters that do not have the OEM’s stamp of approval.
MAGNUSON-MOSS WARRANTY IMPROVEMENT ACT
No warrantor of a consumer product may condition his written or implied warranty of such product on the consumer's using, in connection with such product, any article or service (other than article or service provided without charge under the terms of the warranty) which is identified by brand, trade or corporate name; except that the prohibition of this subsection be waived by the commission if:
The warrantor satisfies the Commission that the warranted product will function properly only if the article or service so identified is used in connection with the warranted product, and the Commission finds that such a waiver is in the public interest
SHERMAN & CLAYTON ANITRUST ACTS
The Sherman Antitrust Act, a basic federal enactment regulating the operations of corporate trusts, was passed by the U.S. Congress in July 1890, and declared illegal "every contract, combination in the form of trust or otherwise, or conspiracy, in restraint of trade or commerce among the several States, or with foreign nations."
The Clayton Antitrust Act was passed by the United States Congress during the administration of Woodrow Wilson and prohibits certain monopolistic practices then common in finance, industry, and trade. The provisions relating to corporate activities declared illegal practices that included exclusive selling or leasing, and other forms of price discrimination.
Put your mind at ease in regard to the validity of not being able to use aftermarket products with your laptop without voiding the warranty. It is illegal for manufacturers to void your warranty because you choose not to use their products with your equipment.
The Magnuson-Moss Warranty Improvement Act gives you that freedom and comfort of being able to use aftermarket products without fear of having your warranty voided.
